Myanmar River Cruise: What You Need to Know First

A Myanmar river cruise on the Irrawaddy was, for about two decades, one of the great small-ship journeys of Asia: golden stupas on every ridge, Bagan’s temple plain at sunrise, villages where the ship was the event of the week. Today the picture is very different, and this site exists to give you a straight, current answer before you spend time or money.

The short answer: the United States government’s advice for Burma is Level 4 — Do Not Travel (Burma travel advisory on travel.state.gov, issued May 8, 2026). Mainstream river lines that sell to Americans have stopped offering Myanmar, and only one specialist operator has put Myanmar sailings back on sale. We will not pretend otherwise. Read on for what is sailing, what the advisory says and where to cruise instead.

Who Is (and Isn’t) Sailing in 2026

OperatorStatus we found (October 2026)
PandawRestarting Irrawaddy Delta expeditions from Yangon in November 2026 after a six-year pause; no Mandalay–Bagan or Chindwin departures listed (see Pandaw’s Burma page).
Belmond (Road to Mandalay)Service reported inoperative from 2023; no sailings on sale.
Avalon WaterwaysDropped Myanmar from 2019, citing low U.S. demand.
VikingWithdrew its Myanmar program; not currently offered.
Other international linesNot selling Myanmar to the U.S. market; check with us before trusting any older brochure or web page.

Older articles and booking pages still advertise Irrawaddy cruises. Many were written before the 2021 coup or the March 2025 earthquake and have never been updated. If a page shows a Mandalay–Bagan sailing with no recent date on it, treat it with caution.

Four Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Have I read the advisory? Our travel advisory page sums it up and links the official text.
  • Is it safe for me? See is it safe to travel to Myanmar for the factors that matter.
  • Will my insurance and my government help if something goes wrong? Both can be limited under a Level 4 advisory.
  • Would another river give me most of what I want? Often, yes — see the alternatives.

Why People Still Dream of Burma

A Burma river cruise was different from most river journeys. Ships were small, often built of teak in the style of the old Irrawaddy Flotilla steamers; days began with temple visits and ended with sunsets over sandbanks; and the country had only recently opened to visitors. That history explains why the demand never quite went away, and why we hear from travelers every season asking whether it is time to go back.

When you are ready, our cruise Myanmar travel guide covers the practical side: visas, money, dress, etiquette and seasons. For the river route itself, see Irrawaddy Cruises; for every Asian river side by side, Asia River Cruises.

How We Can Help

Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise follow river cruise news across Asia. We will tell you honestly whether a Myanmar sailing is something we would book for you, and if not, we will suggest the closest alternative — the Mekong, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra or the Yangtze. River lines and ships for every region are listed in the Official River Cruise Directory, and ocean cruises calling in Southeast Asia are in the Official Cruise Directory.

Myanmar River Cruise Questions

Can I book a Myanmar river cruise for 2026 or 2027?

Very little is on sale. Pandaw has scheduled 10-night Irrawaddy Delta expeditions from Yangon starting in November 2026; the classic Mandalay–Bagan cruises from the big international lines are not on sale. The U.S. advisory remains Level 4: Do Not Travel.

Will my travel insurance cover Myanmar?

Check before you buy. Some policies restrict or exclude cover for destinations under a government “do not travel” warning. Ask the insurer in writing.

Which river is a Myanmar river cruise on?

Almost always the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady), the country’s main river. A few expedition cruises once used its tributary, the Chindwin.
